MDLF has published the Impact Dashboard 2007, the second
annual analysis of the impact its work has on the financial viability of independent
news businesses.
The Impact Dashboard reveals that almost all clients have seen strong
growth in sales revenue, a rise in the number of readers, listeners and viewers
and, ultimately, a major improvement in the financial viability of their
businesses.
The 2007 study also reveals that more than 25 million people
get their news from independent outlets who work with MDLF.
The special nature of MDLF's work, providing low-cost financing
to independent news media, allows us to collect in-depth financial reports from
each client on a monthly basis. By examining changes in key data vital to their
commercial sustainability – sales; numbers of readers, listeners or viewers;
and overall financial viability – we can obtain a clear insight into the impact
our work has on client businesses.
The key findings of the Impact Dashboard 2007 include:
-
In 2006, more than 25
million people in developing democracies got their news from 27 MDLF
clients.
- After five years with
MDLF, clients on average had increased their readers, listeners or viewers
by 18 percent.
- In 2006, 27 MDLF clients
together generated nearly $124 million in sales compared to $104 million
in 2005.
- After five years with
MDLF, clients on average had increased their sales by 361 percent.
- In 2006, each dollar
invested by MDLF leveraged $3.78 in sales by MDLF clients, compared to
$2.49 in 1999.
- For every $10,000 invested
in 2006, MDLF supported access to independent news for 7,824 readers,
listeners and viewers, compared to 4,328 in 1999.
Although challenges remain over how we collect and analyse
this information, we think the Impact Dashboard provides a valuable measure of
the real impact of our work.
