MDLF established the Center for Advanced Media–Prague (CAMP) in 1998 to introduce new-media concepts and solutions to independent media in developing countries, through training, technical and content-building consulting, and project-oriented product development. CAMP develops and implements open-source software and other new technology solutions under the Campware brand, customized for the unique operating environments of independent media in emerging economies.
CAMP is rapidly becoming a hub for a community of creative people interested in the interaction between new and traditional media. It also acts an interface between developed and developing countries and offers opportunities for technological collaboration between the two worlds.
For example, to remedy problems in collecting subscription revenues, payments for books and other publications independent news organizations frequently face in countries with underdeveloped banking systems, MDLF designed the Digital Kiosk - a service that provides a combination of a simple, easy-to-use storefront with electronic payment components.
“[MDLF] provided funding and also the initial technological solution and training for us to create a network of independent radio stations around the nation ... [they] helped us change the broadcasting paradigm in Indonesia ... The long-dormant potential of radio finally has come to bear fruit, and MDLF provided many of the crucial elements that made it possible.” Santoso, Director, Radio News Agency 68H, Jakarta, Indonesia
