John Ryle

John Ryle is Legrand Ramsey Professor of Anthropology at Bard College, New York, and Chair of the Rift Valley Institute, a research organisation working in Eastern Africa. A sometime journalist, he has been a columnist on the Guardian, a contributor to periodicals including the New Yorker, the New York Review of Books and the Times Literary Supplement, and a broadcaster on the BBC and Channel 4. He is a member of the editorial boards of African Affairs, Granta and Condé Nast Traveller.
